About The Neighborhood

N. Luna Avenue is located in the Austin neighborhood, a community on the far west side of Chicago that is one of the city’s largest.  Austin takes its name from its founder, the developer Henry Austin, who settled the area as an autonomous village in 1865.  Early development of Austin was focused on rail transportation and the establishment of public parks and green spaces.  The establishment of major manufacturing zones to the south and west drew workers to the area, prompting dense residential construction throughout the 1920s and 1930s.  N. Luna Avenue is a vintage example of the brick 2-flat architectural style popular during this time.  Austin is home to Columbus Park, one of Chicago’s largest and a National Historic Landmark, which features a boating lagoon, public golf course, and park facilities designed in the Prairie Style by architect Jens Jenson.
