About The Neighborhood

S. Vernon Avenue is a brick 2 flat rental apartment building located in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.  As its name suggests, the history of Greater Grand Crossing is tied to the railroads connecting downtown Chicago and the Midwest.  Greater Grand Crossing’s first residents were attracted to the area by the intersection of the Illinois Central and Lake Shore and Southern Michigan railroads where, beginning in the 1850s, trains would frequently idle to allow rail traffic to pass safely.  The passengers and workers on the stopped trains provided businesses with customers, and the neighborhood began to grow from this economic opportunity.  The 1893 World’s Columbian Exhibition sparked massive growth in the South Side Communities nearest the lakefront, Greater Grand Crossing among them.  S. Vernon Avenue is a good example of the type of housing built during this time.
