About The Neighborhood

E. 72nd Place is a 2 flat rental apartment building in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.  As its name suggests, the history of Greater Grand Crossing is tied to the railroads connecting Chicago and the Midwest.  The neighborhood’s first residents and businesses were drawn to the area by the intersection of the Illinois Central and Lake Shore and Southern Michigan railroads where, as early as the 1850s, trains would idle to allow rail traffic to pass safely.  The passengers and workers on the stopped trains provided businesses with customers, and the neighborhood began to grow from this economic opportunity.  The 1893 World’s Columbian Exhibition sparked massive growth in the South Side Communities nearest the lakefront, Greater Grand Crossing among them.  E. 72nd Place dates back to the population boom enabled by the Exhibition.
