About The Neighborhood

W. 57th Street is a 4 unit rental apartment building in the Gage Park neighborhood.  Initially settled as the town of Lake, Illinois on the site of what was once wild prairie southwest of downtown Chicago, Gage Park was annexed into the city in 1889 as its infrastructure and boundaries expanded.  Gage Park experienced a dramatic increase in population and development with the influx of immigrants arriving in Chicago for work at the Union Stockyards not far to the north.  Gage Park has long been a diverse neighborhood, and was the site of important Civil-Rights activity during the 1960s.  In 1966 Martin Luther King Jr. led a march for racial equality and fair housing in nearby Marquette Park.  During the 1970s, Gage Park continued to be an important site of work toward housing rights and school desegregation.  A number of important community organizations have been founded in Gage Park and continue base their operations there today.
